When it comes to Sony’s cinema lineup, two cameras dominate the conversation for independent filmmakers, people who are working without a Hollywood budget, and run-and-gun shooters: the Sony FX3 and the Sony FX6. Both cameras offer full-frame sensors, incredible low-light performance, and professional-grade video quality, but they serve different needs in the production world.

Here is a pretty basic breakdown of what you can expect with the FX6 vs the FX3. I think the most important ones to note are that the FX6 has built in ND filters while the FX3 does not and the FX3 can take photos while the FX6 cannot!

I’ve used each of these cameras for different productions and honestly I think that they’re really both amazing cameras - you’ll be happy with whichever camera you end up going with.

TLDR - Look, if you need a compact camera with a small profile and you don’t mind using an ND filter on your lens - the FX3 might be the right fit for you. The FX3 is a really powerful camera that produces a beautiful image - one that is pretty much identical to the FX6. It’s a serious piece of equipment that can stand on it’s own. ALSO, and this is important to some of us, the FX3 can take photos while the FX6 CANNOT! This, in my opinion, gives the FX3 major brownie points. I am in no way a photographer, but sometimes when I’m on set I like to snap a few photos and I even share those with clients sometimes! Don’t worry, the FX3 has a built in cooling system and can record longer that 30 minutes - or until your cards run out! Final also - if you are looking to get shots on a gimbal, you’re going to want the FX3.

The FX6’s biggest benefit is that it has a built in ND filter that makes run and gun shooting a bit easier AND it has a lot more room on the body to onboard accessories.

Truly, these are the biggest differences between the two cameras. Audio capabilities - same. Image quality - pretty much same (literally no one but really nit picky professionals can tell the difference).- END OF TLDR!

  • You work with a larger crew. The FX6’s pro-level I/O and SDI support make it easier to integrate into bigger productions.

  • You need a more traditional cinema camera layout. With dedicated dials, buttons, and a top-heavy design, the FX6 feels more like a mini FX9 rather than a mirrorless-style body.
