We Took Our Boston-Based, Video Production Company Abroad For A Month. Here’s How We Did it.
Since our honeymoon in Norway Sam and I knew that we wanted to come back and for more than just a vacation. We were quite sure that this wasn’t an urge to pack up and move, but rather a void we needed to fill for a new type of adventure. We thought that if we were able to, one day, it would be great to be able to live in Norway, or somewhere new and cool like Norway, for a month out of every year.
We’ll by some mixture of luck but also I think mostly hard work we were able to make that happen this October and now looking back on it, it all seems like a dream.
Our month abroad started with our family and a really epic week of vacation time away from work. We went to Tromso and the Lofoten Islands to explore Norway’s more northern regions and it was such an epic week. We finished the initial part of the trip in Bergen, where we stayed for the remainder of our month abroad. Outside of working (really hard, honestly, on a lot of edits and projects we had shot in September) we were really able to dive into the city and explore so much. We wen’t on a lot of really beautiful hikes, visited museums and scooted around the city until our hands almost fell off from the cold rain! Below I’m going to dive into exactly how we managed to make this happen for us!
Our days looked a little different in Norway…
Working remotely while managing a Boston-based video production company required some serious strategic planning. By scheduling all our shoots in September, we left October open to focus on post-production. This allowed us to devote our time in Norway to editing projects, working on creative content, and experimenting with new ideas.
The first few days of working abroad were honestly kind of stressful. It was difficult to be six hours ahead when you were waiting for the rest of the world to wake up. We quickly realized that we needed a new approach when it came to how we broke down our days.
To stay in sync with our clients back home on the U.S. East Coast, we adjusted our daily schedule. Our workday looked something like this:
8 AM to 11 AM: Morning work session to respond to emails, tie up loose ends from the day before, and tackle editing projects where we knew our next steps.
11 AM to 3 PM: Break for outdoor adventures—hiking, exploring, and soaking in the incredible landscapes Bergen has to offer.
3 PM to Whenever: Afternoon and evening work session, where we’d finish editing, plan projects, and prepare for the next day.
Balancing Work and Passion Projects
In addition to client work, we carved out time for our passion projects and just capturing shots that we have wanted to try our for years. With our Sony FX3 and DJI Mini 3 drone, we were able to create some really epic footage and I can’t wait to share more of it with you one day. The experience wasn’t just about exploring a new country for us: it was also a fantastic opportunity to practice our skills, experiment with new filming techniques, and it truly allowed us to expand our creative portfolio.
Reflections on Our Time Abroad
The month was a blend of hard work and unforgettable adventure, and it taught us the value of flexibility and creative thinking. We proved that it’s possible to manage a busy video production business remotely if you’re organized and committed. More importantly, we came away with new inspiration and a refreshed mindset, eager to bring everything we learned back to Boston and our incredible clients. Honestly, it was the trip of a lifetime and I can’t wait to do it again. Who knows where is next!?!
p.s. yes I feel like this post should be longer and include way more footage and videos but no one is perfect - those are coming one day I promise (to myself and Sam)!
